This month, iprism’s Underwriting Director, Gary Johnson is celebrating 45 years of working in the insurance industry.  We asked Gary, who started his insurance career in the filing room at the Head Office of the National Employers Mutual General Insurance Company, to share some of his experiences and insights on his four decades in the industry.

“What are the biggest changes, in your opinion, in the market, since you joined?”

“I would say the much-decreased use of manual processes and handwritten documents; when I started every memo was written by hand, with at least one carbon copy (using separate carbon paper). Who even knows what that is these days? Obviously, computerisation has been a big change also; policy documents used to be manually drafted, typed out and checked, and then sent by post. Also, my first monthly take home pay was just over £80, and my first annual season ticket was £298. However, despite all of these changes, the insurance industry in the City of London is still people focused”

“What have been your highlights within the industry?”

“Definitely the fact that I’ve been able to meet so many like-minded people (some of whom have become long-standing friends). As the industry has evolved, it has allowed me to face new challenges and has given me many new opportunities. Working in insurance has definitely kept me on my toes!”

“Are you happy to be celebrating your 45-year anniversary in insurance whilst working at iprism?”

“I am very happy to be celebrating my 45 years in the industry whilst at iprism. As well as working alongside incredibly dedicated staff, I am so proud at the growth the business has had and the direction we are travelling in. Here’s to celebrating 50 years in the industry whilst at iprism too!”
